There is a wave start system, allowing bursts of 110 people at a time on the course, to regulate the flow of runners and to give a quality running experience. Check out the wave start times on each event page.
You should be prepared to get wet up to your chest on a couple of occasion, and probably your arms beyond your elbows. We don’t plan for you to be fully submerged underwater.
No. The course is fully waymarked.
Harder than you think & more fun than you can possibly imagine! Study all the event materials carefully so you come well prepared.
You’ll need good robust off-road running footwear and running gear that you are comfortable in, during the autumn, which will get wet at times. Gloves and a hat are a good idea if the forecast is cold. In general, you should check up on the weather pre-event and come prepared for the prevailing conditions.
Yes absolutely! Some of our gang will be. We only ask that your outfits do not obscure your vision, your movements or the progress of other runners. The water features may make your Mankini inappropriate but hey, there’s always one….
We have never had mention of illness, despite participants overcoming wet/muddy locations with varying water quality. We strongly recommend that you follow these simple precautions: cover open cuts and wounds before the event; wash your hands and face after the event – the latest anti-bacterial hand washes are good for this; do not handle food unless your hands are clean or it is held in a wrapper; and do not drink the water from rivers, ditches or ponds – as if you would!
You can purchase event t-shirt and hoodies from the Rat Race Store online here. We also offer a customised service where you can print our name or team name on the garments.

The events are in the autumn, which means it could be wet and it could be chilly. You should prepare for the weather conditions and run in what you feel most comfortable in for a tough run, in the autumn, which features mud and water in healthy doses! Robust off road trainers should be used. You will be getting wet therefore wear shorts, socks and footwear that will dry/drain quickly afterwards, if possible. In all events, you will also be getting muddy. Check out the apparel in the Rat Race Store for some inspiration and kit picks for the event which makes a great base layer under a fancy dress costume!
The course is designed so that all features are achievable, even if you have to rely on other runners and our safety staff to get help you through it. This is part of the challenge. It is up to you at all times however to take the decision as to whether you tackle such features. If you wish to bypass, you may of course do so.
No dogs are allowed at Hell Down South due to livestock, horses and deer being on the estate. They are allowed at the event villages of Up North only as long as they are on a lead, under the control of their owners & are cleaned up after. Dogs are NOT allowed to take part in the runs.
If you think you’re going to be on the course for a long time, get a place in an early wave to give yourself the best chance of completing. We’ll never leave a participant out on the course without the full cover of our safety staff, but due to the sometimes remote nature of these event course, we reserve the right to impose a course short-cut if deemed necessary. For the Hell Of A Marathon course, all participants will need to start in Wave 1 and there will be  a rigorously enforced cut-off to prevent people heading out on lap 2 if they are too late. The cut-off won’t be designed to cut-off the majority of the field however. It really is there as a ‘needs-must’ affair.
No race materials are sent out before the event and you will register in person, on the day. Parking passes will be emailed to you in event week.
